  • Ahrefs DR: 28

Background and Initial Challenge

In late 2024, the owner of an iGaming affiliate blog covering online casinos, sportsbooks, and bonus offers came to us for help. It’s one of the hardest verticals in SEO: every commercial keyword is contested by affiliate networks with seven-figure link budgets, the regulatory picture changes state by state, and Google treats gambling content with extra scrutiny.

When we started, the site was getting around 800 organic visits a month. It ranked for a handful of low-volume bonus and game-guide keywords, but had almost no presence in the US market, which is where the affiliate payouts are. The backlink profile looked natural enough, but it was far too thin for iGaming. Most links came from low-authority directories and weren’t passing much trust.

The client’s goal: Grow organic traffic, build real visibility in regulated US states, and win top rankings for high-value commercial keywords like “best online casino” and “sportsbook bonus” terms.

Strategy

There are no quick wins in iGaming affiliate SEO. Competition is brutal, the content has to satisfy both players and compliance, and Google is slow to trust a new gambling domain. Our strategy ran on two parallel tracks:

  • A major push to strengthen the backlink profile (via crowd links and outreach),
  • Improving on-page relevance and alignment with both informational search intent (game rules, how bonuses work, state legality) and commercial intent (casino reviews, bonus codes, operator comparisons).

We split the work into two clear phases:

  1. Aggressive Link Building – crowd and outreach campaigns (December – May)
  2. Stabilization & Maintenance – ongoing support with 1–3 quality links per month, plus regular ranking checks

Month 1: Analysis and Foundation

First, we laid the groundwork. In month one, we:

  • Audited the leading US and EU iGaming affiliates – their links, their content, their strategies.
  • Ran a full site audit to fix technical issues, thin review pages, and SEO gaps.
  • Mapped out search intent: what players were looking for (informational vs. commercial).
  • Pinpointed the main hurdles holding the site back in Google’s eyes, including missing responsible-gambling signals and weak E-E-A-T on review pages.

Result: The site started indexing faster and picked up early rankings for less competitive terms.

Months 2–3: Outreach and Building Trust

Next, we began proactive link building:

  • Sourced relevant, authoritative websites with real traffic that accept gambling content.
  • Launched a targeted outreach and guest posting campaign across adjacent niches: sports media, poker and casino communities, esports, and fintech/payments blogs.
  • Rolled out a balanced, natural anchor text strategy – brand and URL anchors first, with a small share of partial-match commercial anchors.

Result: We saw the first real movement in US rankings – the site broke into the top 20 and even top 10 for mid-difficulty keywords (KD 20–40). In iGaming, that’s a strong start in just a couple of months.

Months 4–5: Scaling Up and Ranking Surge

We kept momentum with sustained link building: more quality outreach, features on gambling news platforms, bonus and operator round-ups, and mentions on relevant blogs and forums.

Result: Google responded positively to the stronger link profile:

  • Top-3 rankings jumped from 12 to over 40
  • Top-10 rankings grew from 89 to over 300
  • Top-20 rankings increased from 260 to over 350

We also gained visibility for more competitive, higher-search-volume phrases. At the same time, US organic traffic rose to 4,100 visits/month.

Month 6: Locking in Growth

We wrapped up the final outreach wave, placing detailed, topic-relevant articles on established sports and gambling sites.

Result: Core commercial keywords jumped significantly – up 20 to 45 positions from where they started. The site began generating consistent operator sign-ups and first-time deposits through its affiliate links.

Months 7–12: Maintenance Mode

We shifted into sustainment: 1–3 high-quality links per month, regular ranking tracking, and periodic site audits.

Results:

  • Rankings held steady and continued to climb, especially in the US.
  • Non-branded traffic share reached 91%.
  • The site started ranking on page 1 for keywords with 3k–20k monthly searches.

Results

After 6 months of intensive work and 6 months of sustained support, here’s what we achieved:

  • 🚀 Traffic increased to 5,500+ visits/month
  • 🔗 Over 500 external links built
  • 📈 Domain Rating up to 28 (+5), URL Rating to 8 (+3)
  • 📊 198 keywords in the top 3, 562 in the top 10
  • 🌍 74.6% of traffic now comes from the United States

A Closer Look at the Numbers

Major Organic Traffic Increase

Monthly organic visits grew from 800 to over 5,500 – a 588% increase. Nearly all of that growth came from the US market, which added roughly 4,300 visitors per month.

In affiliate terms, that’s the difference between a hobby blog and a site that operators want on their partner program.

Stronger Backlink Profile and Authority

We built over 500 quality backlinks. Crowd links provided a solid base, while strategic outreach on sports, gaming, and finance sites boosted domain authority and trust.

As a result, DR rose to 28 (a gain of 5) and UR reached 8 (a gain of 3). The number of referring domains grew substantially – we built links from 500+ sites, though Ahrefs has registered about 76 so far.

Dramatically Improved Search Visibility

Starting point: ~12 keywords in the top 3, ~89 in the top 10, ~260 in the top 20.

After six months: ~198 keywords in the top 3, 562 in the top 10, 144 in the top 20.

This put the client in direct competition with much larger US, European, and Asian affiliate networks for the same casino and sportsbook keywords.

Visibility in AI Search Tools

The site started appearing regularly in AI-driven search results – a strong trust signal in a vertical where AI tools are cautious about which gambling sources they cite. We tracked 6 mentions in Google’s AI Overview, 3 in ChatGPT, 27 in Perplexity, and 6 in Gemini.

Traffic Shift Toward Target Market

The US became the dominant traffic source, accounting for 74.6% of all organic visits. With better rankings for commercial keywords, the site now sends qualified players to partner operators directly from its target region, which is where the highest-paying CPA and revenue-share deals are.

Key Takeaways

Even in a niche as hostile as iGaming, systematic SEO delivers. Combining large-scale link building with intent-focused content creates a foundation for steady growth and faster search engine recognition.

Aggressive link acquisition, smart outreach, and ongoing upkeep can quickly lift visibility – and keep it there.

When a site builds authority, relevance, and trust, even a small affiliate blog can go toe-to-toe with the big affiliate networks and capture meaningful market share in the US.
